Couperose: Understanding and treating facial redness

Couperose is a common skin condition characterized by diffuse redness and small dilated blood vessels (telangiectasias) on the face, mainly on the cheeks, nose and chin.

What is couperose?

Couperose is a common skin condition, characterized by diffuse redness and dilated blood vessels (telangiectasias) on the face, mainly on the cheeks, nose and chin. It often affects fair, sensitive skin, and can worsen over time if left untreated.

Main causes :

  • Genetic factors
    (familial predisposition).
  • Sun and UV exposure.
  • Temperature variations
    (cold, wind, heat).
  • Emotional stress or intense physical exertion.

Solutions to alleviate Couperose

1. Sun protection: a must

Sunscreen is the first line of defence against couperose. UV rays aggravate redness and weaken blood vessels.

  • Choose broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) SPF 50+ sun protection.
  • Fluid, soothing texture: Choose alcohol- and fragrance-free formulas for sensitive skin.
  • For everyday use, even in winter or on cloudy days.

2. Adapted Skin Care

A gentle routine helps calm redness and strengthen the skin barrier.

  • Cleanser: Use a soap-free, pH-neutral cleansing milk or gel.
  • Hydration: Opt for soothing creams containing :
    • Azelaic acid (anti-redness).
    • Niacinamide (anti-inflammatory).
  • Avoid: Abrasive products, mechanical scrubs and irritating active ingredients (strong retinol, high-concentration AHAs).

3. Vascular Laser: a targeted solution

For moderate to severe cases, the vascular laser is the most effective solution. It specifically targets dilated vessels without damaging the surrounding skin.

  • How it works: The laser emits light that is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the vessels, causing them to coagulate and disappear.
  • Results: Significant reduction in redness from the very first session (1 to 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart are often necessary, depending on the severity of couperose).
  • Advantages:
    • Precision: Processes only the zones concerned.
    • Speed: Short sessions (20 minutes).
    • Mild side effects: Temporary redness or swelling (24 to 48 hours).
  • Precautions: Avoid the sun before and after treatment.

Additional advice

  • Diet: Limit spicy foods and hot drinks.
  • Temperature: Protect your face from the cold and wind with a scarf in winter.
  • Make-up: Use non-comedogenic, soothing products, with green shades to neutralize redness.

In a nutshell:

Couperose can be effectively managed with rigorous sun protection, an adapted skin care routine and, if necessary, vascular laser sessions. By adopting these solutions, you can regain a more even, soothed complexion.
